Effects of Drugs on your Ability to Drive
Over-the-Counter Drugs and Prescription Drugs
Although it is generally accepted that such drugs as alcohol and illegal drugs can impair your driving, it is not so often realized that in addition to these more commonly accepted impairments of driving even those substances that are perfectly legal such as prescription drugs, can also affect your driving. In addition to prescription drugs there are common over-the-counter drugs and various medications that can impair your driving abilities. For this reason it is always important that you read the labels on any prescription drugs you use to see how they might affect your driving abilities. Included in this are drugs for allergies, acne, sinus problems, chronic diseases, and other conditions. In the case of those drugs that you might be using that are known to alter your mood or deal with your depressions, you need to be especially careful.
Examples of over-the-counter drugs that can cause drowsiness are such drugs as antihistamines, cough syrups, and cold medications all of which can impair your ability to drive safely. If there is a warning against the operation of heavy machinery while using the medication, than you need to know that this does not just mean such things as bulldozers and front-end loaders but other vehicles as well, such as cars. When you have to use an antihistamine and also drive, you need to ask for one with a non-drowsy formulation.
Use of the Designated Driver
The best way to protect yourself if you feel that you need to drink is to have a designated driver who does not drink when you go out for dinner anduse alcohol. Take note of the times when heavy drinkers are most likely to be driving and to be out on the road. This is usually Fridays after 4:00 p.m., during weekend evenings after 10:00 p.m. and on any day after midnight.
The Results of Drug Use and Drinking and Driving
First of all, of course there is the issue of safety. But remember that in this age of the Internet, virtually all of your records are public records and therefore are fair game. These days also, background checks are more commonly applied than in the past like never before. If you get a DUI or other drug violation, it can affect your ability to obtain jobs and positions of employment, or assume volunteer positions, or even to hold public office, be accepted at a college or university, or even coach your kid’s little league team.
